In 1986 the BBC Master was introduced with 128KB
of memory. It addressed the memory shortage of the
Model B but there were compatibilty issues. Most
software continued to be written for the older machine. |

The Master has all the same connection possibilities
plus two cartridge slots on the top. It also features
a numeric keypad. The disc system was updated to
ADFS, Advanced Disc Filing System, although the
earlier DFS is still available. There are also updated
versions of BASIC and the operating system. Software
titles View, Viewsheet, Edit and Terminal are included
in ROM. My Master also has the Wordwise Plus wordprocessor. |

A version called the Master Compact followed with
a separate keyboard and there was also a bigger
Master 512 but the era of 8-bit computers was coming
to an end and these were too late to make a real
impact. |

The BBC Master has an on-board battery which allows
the computer settings (CMOS) to be retained while
the power is off. These batteries need to be replaced
regularly or they may leak and cause serious damage
to the components of the computer. The correct battery
pack is essential. The Master was designed to have
a rechargeable battery but problems quickly emerged.
As a result, rechargeable batteries must not be
used nor can regular batteries unless they are fitted
with the correct diodes. Replace the battery every
3 to 5 years. |
