FARES

These are fully inclusive and include Reserved Coach Seat, good hotel accommodation with dinner, bedroom and breakfast, early morning tea, newspaper (when available), morning coffe, luncheons and teas en route and gratuities to hotel staff.

INTRODUCTION

THE 1954 season produced record results in the number of people choosing a Hants & Dorset coach touring holiday. Well over 2,000 satisfied customers were carried, and the numerous letters of appreciation and suggestions received have been helpful in preparing this programme for 1955.

Two new tours are incorporated: a 6-day holiday centred on Harrogate and a 19-day holiday extending to the northern Highlands of Scotland. These are fully described in the following notes.

Routes and hotels have been changed whenever necessary to introduce variety and to ensure that the Company's standard of excellence is maintained.

The following notes, repeated from last year's brochure, are for the benefit of new patrons; it will be noted that morning coffee is now included in the charge for each tour:

The charges for these tours are fully inclusive in every sense and provide not only reserved coach seat, hotel accommodation (including gratuities) with dinner, bedroom, breakfast, early morning tea and newspaper, but morning coffee, luncheons and teas en route (including gratuities), at selected restaurants and cafés, all of which have been inspected for satisfactory service.

A fleet of new coaches, specially designed for long-distance cruising and constructed to the latest standard of luxury is used exclusively on these tours. Armchair seats, each individually adjustable to three positions and spaced so as to give ample leg room, were introduced last year. Adequate sun-shading and ventilation have received attention. Rugs for each passenger and optional heating complete a standard of comfort unsurpassed in road travel.

The Couriers are drivers of long experience and specially selected for their courtesy and skill.

The itineraries include the best-known beauty spots, historical monuments, famous towns and places of interest. Early reservation is advised, since a better choice of seats is thereby obtained and some tours are heavily booked early in the season. Seat reservation may be made at any of the Company's Offices or appointed Booking Agencies, particulars of which are given at the end of this brochure. All coach cruises will, as far as possible, be operated as advertised, but the Company reserves the right to cancel or alter any tour if conditions make such a course necessary, or there have been insufficient bookings.

A suitable Hotel has not yet been obtained for the Harrogate six-day holiday tour. Announcements concerning this tour have therefore to be deferred until satisfactory arrangements can be made.

Prices were often shown in guineas rather than pounds so that they appeared lower than they actually were (50gns is £52.50) although there were no guinea coins or bank-notes. This table shows the tour prices in pre 1971 pounds, shillings and pence with the post 1971 decimal (£p) equivalent.
2010 values are an approximate guide to the amount these prices would be today using the retail price index. In relation to average earnings, the 2010 price would be about double that shown.
Hants & Dorset holidays were aimed at relatively well off people.

Western Highlands
52 GUINEAS
Tour No. 8
THIS TOUR has been designed for those wishing to explore the extreme northern Highlands of Scotland, and to do this in a leisurely fashion.

The arrangements provide a combination of the No. 7 Tour, together with a special seven-days' tour operated by Scottish Omnibuses Limited to Strathpeffer and the Western Highlands. Tourists take the first seven days of the No. 7 Tour to Scotland, and on the eighth day (Monday) join the Scottish Omnibuses' coach at the Dunblane Hydro. The tour then proceeds under the guidance of Scottish Omnibuses, who are experts in the exploration of the Highlands by motor coach, and have very comprehensive hotel arrangements and experienced courriers for this purpose.

The first day is spent in travelling through Pitlochry, the Pass of Killiecrankie and Inverness to Strathpeffer. The next five days are spent centred on Strathpeffer, with tours into the grand countryside of the Western Highlands each day.

Loch Ness, Fort Augustus, Loch Maree, Muir of Ord, Ullapool, the Falls of Measach, Lairg, the Falls of Shin, are a few of the names of the places visited. It is doubtful if anyone spending a holiday in the Western Highlands could see so much without the knowledge of the Scottish Omnibuses in the preparation of the routes.

Returning to Dunblane Hydro on the following Sunday, the tourists are again taken into the care of the Hants and Dorset Company and join the second half of the following week's twelve-day Scottish Tour, returning from Dunblane to the Peebles Hydro, from which Edinburgh is visited, and then taking the return route described for Tour No. 7.
