Both countries had previously been imperial powers in Egypt. The canal was due to be handed over to the Egyptian government in 1968. In 1950 Egypt's King Farouk had ordered Britain to remove its troops from Suez. The British response was to move more troops in. In 1952 fighting broke out and there were riots in Cairo followed by a military coup. However, in 1954 president Nasser signed an agreement with Britain which would see British troops withdrawn. In 1956 president Nasser announced the nationalisation of the canal with immediate effect, the shareholders to be paid the value at that time. Britain and France attacked and occupied Suez, with Israel launching an invasion into Egypt. The United States saw this as two old imperial countries trying to hold on to power and refused to back the venture. A vote at the United Nations forced the "allies" to withdraw. The canal was blocked by sunken ships and in Britain petrol rationing was introduced as oil had to be carried the long way around Africa. Bus companies were forced to charge higher fares and withdraw services. Rationing ended in May 1957 and the following year an agreement was reached over payment for the canal shares. The Suez adventure was widely criticised and some held it responsible for the failure of the Hungarian uprising which took place at the same time but was overshadowed by the crisis.
