On the eastern side of the river Itchen, connected to the city via Cobden Bridge. Bitterne Park is at the southern end of Riverside Park which extends along the river to Woodmill and Mansbridge.

Bitterne station 0.52mi / 0.84km - with Cobden Bridge behind you, take the right hand fork passing the clock tower, Cobden Avenue. Beyond the Bitterne Park pub, turn right on to Bullar Road. Follow this road to its end at the Station pub and turn right. Alternatively, turn right at the clock tower and go down Whitworth Crescent, Whitworth Road and Macnaghten Road.
Portswood 0.71mi / 1.14km - over Cobden Bridge and up St Denys Road.
St Denys station 0.68mi / 1.09km - Cross Cobden Bridge and turn left on to Priory Road at the traffic lights. Go under the railway bridge and turn right to South Road. Follow this Road to Adelaide Road and turn left. The station entrance is 0.10mi / 0.16km on the right, shared with the South Western Arms pub.
Woodmill 0.86mi / 1.38km - along the river through Riverside Park. Path liable to flooding and fallen trees and branches in bad weather. There is an alternative road route from Bitterne Park Triangle, via Manor Farm Road then turning left on to Woodmill Lane.
 
Woolston 2.10mi / 3.38km - via Cobden Avenue, turning right down Bullar Road and across Bitterne Road to Athelstan Road (steep hill up). At the top of the road, turn right on to Peartree Avenue. Stay on this road, passing under the rail and road bridges on Bridge Road.
Woolston 3.11mi / 5.01km - via Cobden Avenue, turning right in to Bullar Road. At the bottom of the road, turn right in to Bitterne Road. Cross Northam Bridge and turn left in to Princes Street. Follow this road (its name changes) passing the football stadium and cross the Itchen Bridge. Go down to Bridge Road and turn right.
Woolston 3.18mi / 5.11km - Cross Cobden Bridge and turn left on to Priory Road at the traffic lights. Follow this road to the junction of Adelaide Road at The Junction pub. Turn left towards the Horseshoe Bridge and take the footpath on the left down to the river. Follow this path under Northam Bridge, turn right and go up to Northam Road. Turn left in to Princes Street. Follow this road (its name changes) passing the football stadium and cross the Itchen Bridge. Go down to Bridge Road and turn right.
Riverside Park (City of Southampton) runs for about a mile and a half along the river Itchen from Cobden Bridge (St Denys Road) to Mansbridge (A27) and is cut in two by Woodmill Lane. The park is a good place for a walk, to exercise the dog or let your children play. Near Cobden Bridge you can enjoy the miniature railway on most Sunday afternoons from late March to mid October. (The railway is a hobby run by volunteers and is not a commercial venture. Please check at Southampton Society of Model Engineers before travelling).

Portswood 2.53mi / 4.07km - up Cobden Avenue, turn right to Bullar Road, turn right to Bitterne Road, over Northam Bridge, double back (left) and under Northam Bridge, along the path beside the Itchen, turn right at the end of the path (away from the bridge), along Adelaide Road to St Denys station, cross the footbridge, turn right to Osborne Road South, left to St Denys Road and up to Portswood.
St Denys station 2.05mi / 3.30km - up Cobden Avenue, turn right to Bullar Road, turn right to Bitterne Road, over Northam Bridge, double back (left) and under Northam Bridge, along the path beside the Itchen, turn right at the end of the path (away from the bridge), along Adelaide Road to St Denys station.
Please note
The wooden part of the path between the Horseshoe Bridge and Northam Bridge can be slippery and the remainder can be muddy or flooded.
