To keep costs down, the Electron did not have the multiple sockets of the BBC, just one edge connector at the rear. An extension unit, the Plus 1, could be bought and attached to the computer. This gave a joystick socket (for BBC joysticks, not the more usual Atari type), a printer socket and two cartridge sockets. Cartridge software was available but the majority of software was on tape.

The Plus 1 bolts securely to the back of the computer. Cartridge software is launched by turning the Electron on with the cartridge in place. In some cases, a second cartridge can be installed, for instance a spell-checker with a word-processor.
